Ogre Plays Games: My Short Stint as a Competitive Dota 2 Player

Lifestyle, Showcase

April 3, 2014

A packed Benaroya Hall is pictured during "The International" Dota 2 video game competition in Seattle
The year was 2013. September was beginning and my friends and I were sitting down at EXP Restaurant on a Sunday morning to watch the finals of the International Dota 2 Tournament in Seattle. Navi had clinched the final spot and would face Alliance. It was a fun event and a lot of beer and nachos were consumed. This led to my friends getting some ideas, “Hey, why don’t we play Dota 2 in a tournament? We’re pretty good!” When you’ve had three pitchers of Pilsner anything seems like a good idea to a group of young to middle aged men.
The thought percolated in my brain for a while and then a few weeks later I saw it. Ancient Trials, a locally sponsored Dota 2 tournament administered by Heartless Gerbils Entertainment Limited.

And so my rise to pro gaming stardom began. (more…)

Will The Real Nerd Girls Please Stand Up? Oh, Wait…

Lifestyle, Opinion, The Truth

October 29, 2013

Nerd girl. Geek girl. Both of these are terms that I’ve used to describe myself over the years. But with the “fake geek / nerd girl” discussion rearing its ugly head over the past little while, I’ve been feeling the urge to add a qualifier at the end… “but the real kind”; as if there actually was another variety. And because of that little voice at the back of my head, I’ve unwittingly become a part of the problem. I’ve allowed myself to acknowledge something that really isn’t even there to acknowledge; because there is no such thing as a fake nerd girl.

Now, before I go much further into this, I’ve got to be upfront; I’ve never been “cred checked” at a Con. Never. Not once. The most I’ve gotten are strange glances and the occasional “are you sure you’re in the right place” comment, but I’ve never been questioned as to my right to simply be present. Maybe it is because I don’t cosplay, maybe it is because I’m often the one to strike up a conversation first, or maybe I simply give off a “don’t mess with me” vibe. I don’t really know. But the fact that it has never happened to me doesn’t mean that I’m not worried that it might. And even though I’ve never had to actively prove my nerdiness, I’m still very much aware that the seemingly innocuous questions imply that I somehow don’t belong. (more…)

Casual Kindness

Lifestyle, Opinion, The Truth

March 31, 2013

Our passions and differences go a long way towards defining who we are and what we’re capable of – they are they very foundation of personal strength, and that is something that we need to remind one another of.  This is why I’m sick of the idea that strength is about tearing people down for their passions, differences, or definitions. That doesn’t do anything other than promote insipid acts of cruelty that spiral down into self loathing for everyone involved. (more…)

Geek Restaurants Level Up

March 30, 2013

Where do those of the Tribe of Geek go when the hunger bar starts to flash red?  Is there a place where you can eat in an atmosphere that both satisfies your hunger for both the geeky and the delicious? Well someone thought there should be and set out to make a restaurant and bar for Vancouver’s geekiest and finest gamers.

That’s where EXP Restaurant and Bar comes on the scene. When I first walked into this place I was in shock, maybe it was the decor, the screens displaying my favorite games, or the street fighter music being played across the stereo. This place creates an atmosphere that a geek can thrive in. I was impressed upon entrance and was eager to see what else the place had in store for me. (more…)

Aaron Swartz (1986-2013)

This man is the inspiration for this column. Everyone to be honored under this title is being done so in his name, and that needs to be said. Our sincere condolences to his family, first and foremost, for his loss. And our condolences to this world, which is a lesser place without him.
