Review: Go For Opera! – An Encore Gala Concert

Opera Mariposa and the Heroic Opera Company are combining their talents to produce Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera this November. With such a stellar local and international cast, a fundraiser concert was a great idea. Go For Opera! was set up as a nicely packaged showcase of their talent.

On Sunday, August 20th, I had the opportunity to hear a variety of Opera’s best solos, duets, trios and ensembles sung by a variety of voice types. William Liu’s (baritone) performance was full of emotion, yet you could hear the drama just by listening to his warm colorful voice. Mark Pepe’s (tenor) always-present rich tone supports his ability to sing through his high notes in the most Italian romantic way, with a brilliant and full sound. Melissa Ratcliffe (mezzo-soprano) performed with a voice so pure and clear, I can only describe it as crystalline. In the ensembles, Melissa got me excited about Un Ballo in Maschera, because her tone and presence fits so well, yet shines in a unique way among the other singers.

One of the solo highlights was “Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille” from Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Nancy Hasiuk, a Canadian soprano currently studying and working in Germany, brought brilliance and warmth into even the most difficult coloratura high notes. Nancy also has a natural comedic side, which was carried over to the encore piece, “A Word On My Ear” by Flanders & Swann.

This show had a bittersweet side as well. Not only did we see a wonderful connection to Germany, but this was also a goodbye to an integral member of Opera Mariposa: Managing Director and soprano, Robin Hahn. This was her last show before moving to launch her career in Germany.

Robin brings everything to the stage from her sweet and elegant voice, to her versatile acting. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Robin’s repertoire can be technically demanding, because she makes it look so easy—especially when her character is so engaging. It was heart-warming to watch Robin sing with Heidi Muendel, her first voice teacher.

Heidi Muendel (soprano), Canadian born and working in Germany, will undoubtedly be worth the price of your ticket to Un Ballo in Maschera, just to hear her sing! She is the goddess of resonance, with a deeply rich voice that is both wonderfully dark, with bright overtones at the same time. There’s an Italian word to describe this from the bel canto tradition: chiaroscuro. Heidi has a beautifully balanced sound.

Overall, the concert was a crescendo of beautiful music, including excerpts from Un Ballo in Maschera. To top it all off, everyone joined in to sing the drinking song, “Libiamo ne’ Lieti Calici” from La Traviata. It was a reminder of how much this small community is like family. Their wine glasses may have been empty, which was a good thing, since Heidi’s adorable little girl joined her on stage! Yet, their glasses were full of something else: love, joy, and artistry.

Vancouver Chipmusic Society – Making “Toys” Sound Good

We recently made contact with the Vancouver Chipmusic Society to talk about their organization and the culture around chip music. 


LM: Can you give us a history of the Vancouver Chipmusic Society?

VCMS: For the last few years, I (Bryan) had been going to and occasionally performing at chiptune shows and festivals around the world in key cities that had developed a critical mass of chiptune enthusiasts – but I would usually return home to Vancouver lamenting that no such scene existed here.

I had since then been quietly keeping tabs on the few local chiptune artists and enthusiasts I did stumble across, in the hopes of starting a local scene when the time was right.  It wasn’t until Spring of 2016 that I decided there were enough interested people to warrant putting together a team and organizing a Vancouver-based chip show.

We ended up having the first installment of our chiptune concert series (dubbed “OVERFLOW”) on September 2016.  We had another edition of the show in March of this year, and of course, our third show is happening next Wednesday. The response has been pretty great, and just by virtue of the show existing we were surprised to see some talented local chiptune musicians being drawn out of the woodwork – artists that we otherwise wouldn’t even have known about!  So we’re very humbled to see the beginnings of this kind of community take shape, simply because we decided to take matters into our own hands.

LMM: Is there a community mandate?

VCMS: Our goal is basically to be true to the chip music art form and culture as it exists today – many of our organizers have been to chip shows elsewhere around the world and we want to preserve the feel of those shows while putting our own unique spin on it.  We feel that central to these events is the celebration of the independent/DIY aesthetic, as well as a certain streak of counter-culturalism – the use of these obsolete machines to make fresh and original music is in some ways a statement about freeing oneself from the latest economic/technological trends.

We also feel like this is music that anybody can enjoy, regardless of whether they know anything about video games or not.  So we try not to present our events as gaming-themed, although such associations are unavoidable – it’s really more about appreciating the purity of sounds that don’t sound like any classic human-made instrument and could be enjoyed in their own context, free from the computer/video game connections.

At a more abstract level, these events about celebrating how skillful leverage of heavy restrictions can lead to some really compelling forms of art.  You’ll see this in the masterfully-done pixel art for some of the games we’re showcasing, as well as much of the live music, much of which is made using sound chips capable of only 3 or 4 sounds/tones at a time.

LMM: How many members do you have currently?

VCMS:  We’re not actually structured like a club with memberships or anything like that – our organizational structure consists of about 5 or so members, mostly fellow artists, that have offered to help with all the logistical stuff needed to put on events like shows and workshops.  We also have a few enthusiastic friends who have been great with volunteering at our events, but beyond that, that’s about it.

In terms of show turn out, we’ve averaged about 60 attendees, which is actually quite decent for a chip show!

LMM: How did you get into Chip music?

VCMS:  When I was younger, I would spend lots of time collecting and listening to executable computer music (.MOD files) that I would find online.  These types of music files contained all the song data and instrument sounds – it blew my mind to be able to SEE the music on the screen instead of just listening to it.  Much of this music was actually some of the first chip music that existed.

In about 2007 or so I discovered that there were communities around the world that still enjoyed listening to and writing this sort of music, even to the point of organizing shows and festivals.  Many of those artists were using Game Boys and other hardware to write and perform their music, and when I looked more closely at how it worked, I realized that it was actually pretty easy to learn.  I’ve since been writing chip music under the pseudonym “bryface“.

LMM: If someone wanted to get into Chip music as an artist what would you need?

VCMS: Most of the relevant software is either free or insanely affordable.  Famitracker (which you can use to write hardware-accurate NES music) is freeware.  Little Sound DJ, which can run on a real Nintendo Game Boy via special flash cartridges, costs only ~$2 for a license – but you can run it on a software-emulated version of a Game Boy.  If you’re not interested in achieving dogged hardware accuracy, there are many audio plugins that emulate the basic sound chip waveforms which you can load up on typical Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software, for use either by themselves or to be incorporated with other software instruments.

LMM: Who are your current “Chip” favorite artists?

VCMS:  It’s a pretty varied and extensive list so I couldn’t possibly name them all.  But I would wholeheartedly recommend xyce, cTrix, HarleyLikesMusic, RoccoW, Fearofdark, Saitone, and chibi-tech among a zillion others – I would say that represents a pretty meaty cross-section of many chip-related sub genres including demoscene, acid, funk, pop, IDM and electro.

One interesting detail about the above artists that I’ve met or shared the stage with the vast majority of them in person in the last couple of years, at the various chip shows and festivals that have happened around the world.  That hopefully helps to illustrate how surprisingly close-knit this global scene is, even though many of us live on completely different continents.

LMM: And finally who is your favorite non “Chip” artist?

VCMS: Oof, that’s a really hard question to answer, again because my musical tastes are as eclectic and transient as they come!  But just recently I went with a friend of mine to a Jacob Collier one-man live performance – if you’ve ever seen his viral videos where he layers dozens of takes of his vocals over top of instrumental layers that he also himself performs right from his room, then you’ll have an idea of his staggering musical talent.  If anybody deserves more attention diverted their way for their talent and hard work, it’s that kid.

Review – Story Story Lie All-Star Season Closer

It has been a hell of a year for Story Story Lie! Starting off at Cafe Deux Soleils and ending at The Fox Cabaret, and with that having one of the best endings to a season one could have.  The closer was a who’s who of storytellers from the area all vying to trick the audience, but really just amazing us and sometimes embarrassing themselves.

Jo Dworschak and her “Vanna” Matt Loeb hosted a great show and their chemistry and comedic timing made the night super amazing. The Storytellers for the night were Zain Meghji, Nic Enright-Morin, Burcu, Mark Hughes,  Suzy Rawsome.

The first story of the night was from Nic Enright-Morin who told us a story about how she was an ESL teacher in England and agreed to cat sit for a co-worker who lived on a houseboat for two weeks. The cat ended up thinking she was the best and one night when she decided to drunkenly bring a former student home to get lucky only to have cat attack him while they were doing the deed. She ended up dislocating her knee and he ended up needing medical treatment, they both ended up having to go to the hospital. The co-worker came back to almost everything in the boat being covered in blood…Or did she?

The second story of the night was from Suzy Rawsome who regaled us with the story of being a trashy teenager in Surrey who was a late bloomer but ended up getting drunk at a park with some friends and hooking up with a guy behind some trees in which she decided to get fully naked. Their friends figured out that they were boning and stole her clothing. They managed to put her underwear up on the backstop of a baseball diamond. She had to pay a friend 10$ to retrieve it a week later…Or did she?

The third story was from Mark Hughes who lived a rough life and he and a friend decided to rob a convenience store to buy drugs while drunk. They ended up stealing a car and then crashing it. They had a gun with them and Mark hid it under the seat of the car after crashed. Before being taken to the hospital he decided to pretend to be unconscious, the hospital staff treated him really nicely until they found out that he had stolen a car. The nurse once she found out what was going on, shoved the catheter into his penis with extra force… he had to continue to play unconscious while that was happening. He ended up going to jail and sobering up. Later on, he found out that the gun he had, was a replica and therefore wouldn’t have been able to fire…Or did he?

The fourth story was from Burcu who had a client who was a prominent politician who was also a cross-dresser. He came to her for years privately to have her help him buy clothes for him to wear privately and they became good friends. One day he came to her with all of his clothes and said he wanted to stop cross-dressing because he felt like it was hurting his family. After talking it through she agreed and bought back all of the clothing they had picked out. A few hours later a woman came into the store and bought almost all of the clothing that he had turned in. And a few hours after that, the politician called to say that all of his cross-dressing clothes were back in his closet and wanted to know what was going on!? Apparently, the woman who bought the clothes was his wife…Or did she?

And the last story was from Zain Meghji who went on a trip to Columbia but started having bad stomach pains and was vomiting. They told him it was altitude sickness. When he came back to Vancouver he went to a hot yoga class and started having the same sickness. He went to the doctor who said that he had the flu. Then he went on a hike with an activity group and continued to have the same symptoms. He kept Googling the symptoms and every time he would it would tell him that he had an appendicitis. However, every time he went to the doctor they would tell him he didn’t. Eventually, he went to a yoga retreat and was so sick that when he came back he went to the ER and that is when they told him that he had a ruptured appendix but that they were going to wait until October 27, 2017, to see if it is worth operating on. He may or may not be dead by then, but who knows… or does he?

After each story was done, the audience got to ask pointed questions and the storytellers had to answer them. There was also an expert on “Lying” as a guest who would give an analysis of who was and wasn’t truthful based on body language. Then we were told to text Jo our guess as to who was the liar. They tallied up each vote and at the end of the night, Nic and Suzy were tied.

So, who was the liar? Who wasn’t? Well… you are going to have to listen to the podcast when it comes out. 

Story Story Lie is a gem, and it is going to become even better when it moves to The Rio on September 21st.

Shakespeare Butts Review

If you haven’t heard already, Geekenders and Instant Theatre are partnering up to put on a Fringe show, “Slumber Here”, a real life RPG retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. To raise funds for the much hyped mini donkey and portal to the fairy world, Geekenders presented to us A Bawdy Night of Bardlesque Revelry, a variety of burlesque acts based on the Bard’s sizeable body of work. Whether a Shakespeare nerd or someone who appreciates the art of burlesque, this marriage of the two is sure to be an entertaining ride.

The night began with the audience filing into the Rio Theatre with Shakespeare memes on the screen and Ren Faire-esque music from the speakers. As the band for “Slumber Here” led by Ian Montgomery takes the stage, the theatre came to a hush and otherworldly music filled the air. After a couple of songs, William Shakespeare himself (Instant Theatre’s own Nikolai Witschl) sauntered up to the stage to deliver many puns before introducing the first act with even more puns.

First act of the night was Hairy von Heels with his reinterpretation of King Lear. New to burlesque, Hairy von Heels brought life and humor to the tragic tale of familial love and succession. His costume changes and dance routine ended with a crown on his head and not much else.

Next in line was a routine based on The Merchant of Venice with Effie Alexandra as Portia and Stephen Blakley as Bassanio. Effie Alexandra’s mesmerizing routine had heavy hip hop overtones and incorporated selected audience members as the princes of Morocco and Arragon. As the number unfolded, each chose a box of gold and silver, leaving the box of Pb for Bassanio, thus winning her hand in a passionate embrace.

Afterwards, it was Antony and Cleopatra with Catfish as the titular queen of Egypt. Catfish’s Elizabeth Taylor-esque Cleopatra captured the audience with silliness and exaggerated expressions while prancing around on stage to The Bangle’s “Dance like an Egyptian”. An actual trouser (stuffed) snake put the routine to an end as Cleopatra slipped into eternal slumber.

What Midsummer Night’s fundraiser would be complete without its very own number? Next, we have Cruella De Vine in a transformational number as Nick Bottom. It began with the writer puzzling over his script only to have a fairy blow fairy dust (or glitter, as it is known in the mortal realm) blown in her face. This spelled her metamorphosis from human to Eeyore, off to find her Titania.

The only historical number of the night was Bella de Colletage as Queen Margaret from Henry VI. This kickass number saw Queen Margaret strutting on stage as Hairy von Heels’ Duke of York cowered in a corner in awe and fear.

Another of the Bard’s famous work, Taming of the Shrew, we had Jayne Fondue as Bianca, and Graeme Thompson, Greg Delmage, and Stephen Blakley as her three suitors. This hilarious number began with the three attractive – if pompous – suitors vying for Bianca’s affections and almost winning it. After much competition and chest pounding, each suitor then brought a gift as the final offering, one of which was a cheese pizza. To the audience’s surprise and delight, Jayne Fondue’s Bianca ran off with the pizza and left her suitors behind, awkwardly consoling each other.

Before intermission, the stage took a dark and delicious turn with Titus Andronicus, in which Kitty Glitter’s Titus committed a fun, brutal murder. Hairy von Heels and Seamus Fit-It-In appeared briefly as Chiron and Demetrius, Titus’ guilty victims who were made into pie. Kitty Glitter then smeared said pie all over herself and fed the audience whipped cream, once again proving that revenge is a dish best served sexy.

After intermission, the Slumber Here band once again captivated the audience with a couple of lively tunes before Will Shakespeare welcomed them back and introduced them to Romeo and Juliet. Trixie Hobbitses and Stephen Blakley serenaded the crowd with a parody of “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” from The Sound of Music – “Thirteen Going on Fourteen”. The altered lyrics brought to light how amusingly creepy and ridiculous the premise of the story was, all the while in ironic contrast to Trixie and Stephen’s adorable displays of affection.

Next, we have a gender transcending number with Rear Admiral Ziggy Starbutts as Twelfth Night’s Viola/Cesario. Ziggy sashayed on stage to a jaunty tune in a full suit, top hat, and a sparkly mustache. As the dance number progressed, she tap danced her way into a flowy dress and presented herself to be Viola, before shedding even that to reveal “Olivia” scrawled on her stomach with an arrow pointing downward, and “Orsino” above her rear.

No Shakespeare night is complete without Lion King Hamlet. Draco Muff-Boi and Ginger Femmecat took to the stage as the titular character and his lover. Ginger brought vividly to life the ethereal and delicate Ophelia, while Draco’s Hamlet appropriately brooded and sulked around the stage. With Ginger drowning in a mist from a squirt bottle and Draco expiring from poison, the routine came to an end with a proper Hamlet ending.

The second supernatural act of the night saw Jaspurr Moans as The Tempest’s Ariel. No, not the mermaid. This Ariel was more bird-like and danced sensually to enchantingly stormy music, ensnaring the audience with her routine.

Another spellbinding routine, the second last act was Lithium Little, Taylor Mayde, and Leeloo Oleander as the Wyrd Sisters from the cursed Scottish play. This bewitching display had the three sisters gyrating against fittingly ominous music with fireplay a consistent motif throughout the spellbindingly eerie number. The unearthly performance ended with the foretelling of Macbeth’s rise and fall, with a flash of fire through the crown.

Last but not least is Adam Stargasm’s debut as Julius Caesar, alongside Effie Alexandra, Kitty Glitter, Hairy von Heels, Princess Iwannaleia, Seamus Fit-It-In, and Stephen Blakley. This entertaining yet increasingly chaotic number captured perfectly the tumultuous nature of politics. And in true Shakespearean tragedy fashion, everybody died.

All in all, Bardlesque was much like many other Geekenders ventures, clever and entertaining. Even accumulating a pile of bodies on stage had the audience in stitches. Gentlemen Hecklers: Krull

Oh, gods. Krull. Where does one even begin?

Krull is a science fantasy masterpiece of a film that is everything that the early eighties had to offer: confusing decisions about story, theme, character, and clothing. A weird underlying philosophy about the power of prophecy and wedding vows that result in the power to shoot fire. And an evil army that travels through space in a giant mountain fortress that teleports every day.

I mean, what?

This sounds like an early Dungeons & Dragons adventure module that someone with more cocaine than sense decided needed to be made into a film – and the cocaine was right. Krull did need to be turned into a film, and the film we got… well, look at the trailer:

This is the perfect fodder for people like the Gentlemen Hecklers, and certainly the perfect film for them to celebrate their five year anniversary.

Come witness three of the geniuses that brought us the Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot as they return to the Rio Theater. Eric Fell, Shaun Stuart, and Patrick Mahlia return to the Rio Theater to five years of laughs and bad movies brought to the big screen.

On August 9th, these three plucky heroes will confront the Beast in the heart of the Black fortress that some call the Rio Theater, a place which does not teleport so much as loom over the intersection of Commerical and Broadway in Vancouver, British California, Canada. Review: The 24 Carrot Show! Fou Fou Ha! Featuring FOU YORK!

Last night… I gave a lap dance to a clown on stage while 100 people at The Rio cheered me on… because, in this show, audience participation is its own reward!

Let me explain how I got there.

Earlier this week we did an interview with Maya Lane, creator of Fou Fou Ha! It was great! She is great! Then, last night I went to the show. I went with Miss Dee Twenty because we like to go to things like this with each other.  We also sat near other local burlesque performers. The performers went around the audience and would ask weird questions like, “What agenda items would like to add?” and also, they would catch popcorn with their mouths if you threw it at them.

When the show began there was a lot of prepping for the fact that this show relied on our participation. This is usually not the case with most stage shows in Vancouver… and of course, it isn’t like most shows in Vancouver, because this show is unabashedly San Fransico!

After some banter from the host Jamie Dewolf and lovely tightly choreographed dancing from “The Fou’s” the first contest was announced… they didn’t say, hey who wants to give a clown a lap dance… all you got was beautiful clowns coming into the audience and saying hey you there… get on stage! So, there I was, standing next to Miss Dee Twenty, on the stage of The Rio, when the host assigned us numbers and then said, ok, you will go in order and when we tell you to start… give our “sluttiest” clown Fluffer Fou, a lap dance. In that moment, I knew what I had to do. I had to take off my shoes and limber the fuck up.

I was second in line, the first contestant tried really hard but you could tell that he was extra uncomfortable, but the audience whooped and hollered and went OWW! OWW! OWW! Then, my turn.

I gave a clown a lap dance. I apparently gave him a really good lap dance because he was really liking it and people in the audience were even louder than they were for contestant 1. I actually don’t remember what I did in my lap dance… I do remember that someone told me afterwards that they liked my tramp stamp…

Then, Miss Dee Twenty (professional burlesque performer), gave a clown a lap dance… and well she did the splits.

Then contestant 4 gave a clown a lap dance… unlike the rest of us… this dude gave us some full on Magic Mike style male stripper action.

In the end… the whooping and cheering and applause chose the winner… And surprise surprise our local professional burlesque performer Miss Dee Twenty won!

After that more beautiful dancing and then… something completely different. The members of the troupe would come on stage remove as much of their clowning attire as possible and give monologues about how clowning and burlesque saved them. How performing, how encouraging others to let their freak flag fly, to let the shadows come out, into the light, was transformative. There were performers who were suicidal until they found clowning, performers who didn’t know where they belonged and felt trapped in a world where they had to hide until they found clowning, and even the creator of the show, a therapist, said that clowning is her therapy.

After more crazy contests including telling embarrassing sex stories that were then reinterpreted in the art of dance! and pretending to make love to a carrot the show ended with everyone being asked on stage to take pictures with “The Fous” and have a big dance party and hug fest.

And this is the type of show The 24 Carrot Show! is.

It is so much more than pretty people taking off clothes and encouraging audience members to give a clown a lap dance, the theme of the night is own your celebrate your mistakes and your weirdness.

Preview: The 24 Carrot Show! Fou Fou Ha! Featuring FOU YORK!

Fou Fou Ha! is an ensemble of animated character performers who thrill audiences with over the top shows filled with Circus antics, jaw-dropping dance numbers to high-energy music and audience interactive playfulness. The Fous are a family of enticing, colourful, sexy performers, each owning a unique character that celebrates individuality and unabashed human expression.

Loved by many wherever they go, FFH inspires audiences to celebrate, dance, let out their inner Fool and be comfortable with their shadow. Divine trixters, sexy activators, captivating performers, out of the ordinary show. This is theater at it’s best, and the Fous make sure you have a good time watching and engaging with us.

We had a chance to talk to Maya Lane creator of Fou Fou Ha about the troupe and their upcoming shows on July 28th and 29th at The Rio in Vancouver:

LM: Can you give us a brief but fascinating history of how Fou Fou Ha! came to be.

ML: It began when I was studying dance in Holland and the Cirque culture in Europe became very inspiring and influenced me a lot. When I came back to The States I had the chance to go to Burning Man and those two experiences combined with my love of the club kid aesthetics from the ‘90’s led me to create Fou Fou Ha. The clowning aspect grew organically from there.

LM: How did you get involved with The Rio?

ML: We were introduced to Corrine of the Rio by Jasper Patterson and  Jamie Dewolf who is a well known performer in San Francisco who happens to do the annual Game of Thrones Live show, Corinne from the Rio came to see our show last year in SF and invited us to bring it to the Rio. This meeting made it so that we could do a yearly show at The Rio.

LM: Do you feel yourself to be a burlesque troupe that happens to clown… or a clown group that happens to also do burlesque?

ML: We didn’t start as either. We are a dance company who likes theatrics. But eventually, the aesthetic went to clowning and satire. Burlesque performance was also added later on as well. So, as a pure tracing of the genealogy of the show, we are clown troupe first.

LM: How many are in the troupe that is performing in the Vancouver show?

ML: 10 from San Fran and 4 from New York

LM: If you were early to get to your plane and you had 20$ what would you spend it on?

ML: A dry martini and an Italian Vogue
