God of Comics – Mech Cadet Yu #1

Mech Cadet Yu #1 (BOOM! Studios)

A lot of crazy mech stories get told, some of the better than others. Neon Genesis Evangelion is getting another ‘for realsies, guys,’ final movie when Toppen Turren Gurren Lagann pretty much is the best thing the genre is capable of. The Netflix Voltron reboot is right around the corner, too, and that looks like it’s going to be all kinds of fun.

This? Mech Cadet Yu? This is something else again.

Writer Greg Pak – the guy what brought you Planet Hulk – is tossing his pen into the ranks of mecha stories and he’s got an interesting pitch: the giant robots come to Earth from space once a year and choose pilots to go with them, forming a group called the Sky Corps. The Sky Corps, of course, protect the Earth from a terrifying alien threat. They’re called the Sharg but they’re secondary to this particular plot, a detail for a more interesting setup.

See, the robot that chose our protagonist must have been ill the day of the choosing. Yu is not your typical kid and not the typical choice, and that’s going to make everyone’s life much more interesting…

Following Greg on this madcap adventure is Takeshi Miyazawa, fresh off an incredible run on Ms. Marvel. The two of them have described this effort as a combination of Totally Awesome Hulk and Pacific Rim, which sounds like all of the fun, doesn’t it?

Here’s the secret: it is. If you like big fun ridiculous stories with heart and depth, this is a thing you will enjoy.
